Book to Movie/TV Show Talk

Hey!

This is such a massive topic I most likely will come back to it, however I saw a question in a tag on BookTube and it was would you rather all books be made into TV shows or Movies and it got me thinking... What would I pick

Its easy to see especially at the moment that movie makers are loving to make book to movie adaptations and this is seen in TV Shows, and this results in the good the bad and the ugly!

Sounds a bit harsh but some movie adaptation are very poorly made, I understand you need to cut heaps out of the book to make it movie size but changing rather large sections can have its consequences for such die hard fans. The Mortal Instruments based on the series by Cassandra Clare and the Vampire Academy movie based on the series by Richelle Mead were okay for me but I think they could have been better if more time had gone into them and the right people were there that actually had a passion for what they were doing.

A good movie adaptation I would have to say would be the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the story is a little different and they cut some things out but its still got so much of the tone and most of the content from the book that fans of the books can relate get it and love it.

There just seems too many book to movie adaptations though and I'm getting a little sick of them, especially when they have been done so many times like the fairy tales (Not a fan of the snow white movies that have come out). Don't get me wrong I do enjoy them and I gladly go see them when I book I like is turned into a movie or start reading a book as I liked the movie or TV show.

I have done this with Game of Thrones, and so many people say about these kinds of shows and movies that the book was just better... It brings up the question do you read the book first? For me its normally a yes, I read the book before I see or watch a TV show mostly.

Guilty Pleasure

But with TV shows these are mixed for me, I quite like the Vampire Diaries and True Blood but never read the books and watching the shows makes me not want to read them. TV shows get so much more room, more room to craft the story but also more room to change it. Look at the delirium pilot, was supposed to be a TV show from the Delirium series by Lauren Oliver... I quite liked this series but the pilot had the whole first book in it! It had beyond insta love, as in it only took 40 minutes!. This to me was done poorly, I liked the books and it could have made a really good show as the plot and the ideas behind the story I thought could make a great TV show...

I loved these books, show however...

Please don't think I only like vampires! Just such easy examples, the adult books and other moe contemporary books to movie adaptation has been done a lot better I think with movies like the Notebook, the Giver, the Book Thief, the Help etc. John Green and Nicolas Sparks books have adapted well to the book/movie change, there is still hope and this is a never ending discussion!
Lets hope the future book adaptations get there stuff together... Really hoping the Mortal Instruments TV Show is good too...

Genres I don't really read...

Hey!

There is a lot of genres that I don't really read, I think part of it is because I have never been able to buy a lot of books, only been able to get a few for my birthday or Christmas and at special sales and another reason would be I have my favorite types so never really wanted to branch out.

Its not like I hate any genre type of book just for some they just aren't really my cup of tea or I haven't felt like it. I think some books you need to be in the right mood for to get the full experience out of them.

These genres are most serious contemporary books I don't really read, I usually read the funny type of contemporary and for this I'm disappointed in myself because I know there is so many great contemporary reads out there. Any suggestions are more than welcome!

I also don't read a lot of Sci-fi, thriller or crime novels either, as I have never been a fan of scary type books since I was younger, I sort of grew out of Goosebumps and I believe Anthony Horowitz also wrote some super scary books that I read as a kid and it just put me right off them. I have wanted to read more sci-fi and crime mystery type books definitely Those genres in the right setting I think I could really enjoy. I read my first alien book series this year which I guess is kinda sci-fi.

I've always been a comfort reader, I read what I like and nothing more its like a safety blanket reading for me, such a huge load is off my shoulders when I go deep into a new mysterious world unlike our own and so many genres I have closed the door to.

I think to say as you get older however these things change and now I do read a lot more variety as I have started to get into these genres but also adult and new adult books as well. Trying to stretch my range which I think is great, to get out of that comfort zone and to discover something new like with writing my blog its something new and definitely out of my comfort zone.

Genre of the Day: Fantasy and Paranormal Genre

Hey!

I've been trying to think of a way to split up the fantasy section so I think I'm just going to go for it and talk about some of my favourite aspects of the fantasy genre!

I love this genre because its soooooooooooooo massive and can have so many different supernatural and paranormal aspects into it. So I will get over the first classic fantasy type novels and those are vampire, I went through the twilight phase. Yes I read it and I didn't mind it its quite a nice series and it reminds me of my youth, even though I'm not that old

I went through a wide range of books after twilight and I went through that after twilight phase of fantasy, such as the Evernight series by Claudia Gray this has a really interesting take on vampires and vampire hunters plus a little ghosty which is one of the reasons why I liked it. I also read some of the series by Alyson Noel such as the Immortal Series, talking about immortally and the price that comes with that and the Soul Seeker series this is about a girl who discovers something isn't right when she sees and does things that are out of this world!. The obvious after twilight book for me was the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare who also has a lot of the supernatural aspects in it.

About being Immortal

I like these supernatural aspects because its something different and there is so many different variations which can particularly seen with vampires and is such a classic genre on itself. I haven't read a lot of some of the fantasy genres on there own such as werewolves and fairies but I have read technically my first alien book! Woo me!

I love the variety of it, a series I read called the Shadow Falls series by C.C Hunter I liked because it had a bit of everything and was in such a unique camp setting, vampires, werewolves, witch/warlock, shapeshifters and fae. But I also like the high adventure type fantasy novels, some of my favorites that I would call fantasy are C.S Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, based on the creation and adventures people take when they get whisked away to Naria and the Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman, follows a couple of different parallel universes, a great adventure series. They have such an old school vibe and have such awesome characters plus the story and the concept are really deep and actually have a meaning for me plus can be read at any age.

The thing I like is it creates a new world and I think that's where fantasy loses people because you have to get through that first book, its so important if you want to get into fantasy and give it a good go then you have to stick with it because fantasy is all about building, its about building that world and you will thank the author later for having such a clear awesome system to that world!

A older adventure series

I love a good adventure too, most fantasy novels that I love have a great big adventure like a mission to go on, a lot of paranormal fantasy is missing that for me sometimes

I am reading a fantasy series at the moment its called the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, its not for a younger audience as it does have some graphic aspects to it and I think that's what puts people off about the series but I like it however its hard to get into. If you look at goodreads about this series it has terrible reviews and I think that's just because people get different things from it, its not my favorite series sure but its not that bad.

Fantasy is such a big umbrella and a lot of the time you just have to feel your way around it, I believe its a ever changing genre and its always fun to read

Hyped books and the little guy

I have been really bad and haven't put anything up on my blog in almost a month!
But I feel like today instead of doing my fantasy talk which I have now decided will be in a couple of parts I want to talk about Hyped books

I have had mixed feelings when it has come to books that I have read because of the hype whether thats negative or positive. Some really hyped series that I have loved would definitely be the Shatter Me trilogy by Taherah Mafi, just because I went into it not knowing a lot, just that it was awesome and I really enjoyed it.

I have read a series because of the negative hype too actually, I read the Hush Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick. There was so much hate on this series and I ended up kinda liking it, granted its not my favorite series but there was some aspects that I really liked.

This series is about Angels and especially Fallen ones!

I try very hard not to hype books whether its negatively or positively, for me these both can be a way of hyping books. I do fall victim sometimes... Such as discusing the Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson

Friend: Yeah I can't wait to read it since I'm halfway through the Mortal Instruments Series
Me: Oh no way! you should totally pick up her other series the infernal devices its Amazing! *Followed by a spew of other over reactive crazy adjectives to describe this series*

After this I realized I hype books, and I hype them to the extreme! A lot of my recommendations come with a spew of crazy adjectives describing all my feels for a series and it got me thinking...
How many series that I have read have been because someone hyped this up, obviously as I love BookTube this happens a hell of a lot... most of the books that are on my TBR pile at the very least half have been hyped by someone and made me want to read them

It comes down to advertising my brain is getting seriously worked over by it, not always as a lot of the books I have read don't get talked about at all, some of my favourite authors no one talks about but Over hyping books is a problem
It sometimes works out the book is well received and a lot of people enjoy it with a small amount not liking it but then there are those other books where publishers get everyone involved and the book gets terrible reviews. One book springs to mind but I'm not about to name and shame but this book was pushed soooooooooooooooooo hard and I still haven't heard a good review about it

My point I guess if I have one, is that its crazy how much this affects reading and not always in the best way and it actually happens everywhere not just with reading.
I'm a hyper and I read hyped books but its so important to make your own assumptions and branch out from the norm there are so many great authors out there that deserve the spotlight a little as there stories are captivating too

I hope this wasn't too jumbled up with my random thoughts, I go for a messy blog which I guess can annoy some people but I write what I feel

Genre of the Day: Contemporary

Hey!

Today I want to talk a little bit about my feels on the Genre Contemporary, it will be kinda small since you can talk forever about these genres!

There is obviously a lot of different types of contemporary and I have never been the biggest fan as I got older. When I was younger I read a lot of these kinds of books because I think I was trying to learn more, some of my favourites would be the Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison (One of the funniest book series I have ever read! Still a favorite today as I have reread them over like 10 times) and another was the Sisterhood of the travelling pants books by Ann Brashares.

I liked that these books had a message and I think when I was younger I wanted to know that I wasn't the only one going through things. There are obviously a lot of contemporary types and sub genres but I have always like the funny romantic ones.
I do like the more serious ones and have been trying to find some more to my style, I love a good warm and fuzzy one I hate to admit haha

I think contemporary novels are great especially because you get those stand alone, you can't really write a great fantasy book for instance with just one book. The depth and the issues that some of the books hit on are important and especially in today's society, I really like a book I can connect with and I love those authors who aren't afraid to tell it how it is and paint a vivid picture of the issues affecting young people. I have also wanted to read some more adult books too in the contemporary genre but haven't found any yet

I think some go to authors from this genre would be Stephanie Perkins, Rainbow Rowell and Morgan Matson to name just a few definately have these guys on my TBR, I have also seen though for the more “New Adult” Genre a good author seems to be Colleen Hoover. A book tuber who has some good contemporary books would maybe be Kassidy Voinche, Booktube is a great place to find out about books and I highly recommend it :)

Genre of the Day: Historical Fiction

Hey!

I want to do a couple of posts, maybe one a day about some of the genres I like and wish to read more of and maybe even some I don't really like so today I thought I would start with Historical Fiction

I have always loved the idea of historical fiction novels and I have tried with some classics such as Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen which didn't work out well as I found the writing style hard (Probably shouldn't jump right in with a classic). This actually put me off the genre and I couldn't really find anything that interested me, I love fantasy and I found that other worldy experience awesome so why look for something more like our own. I do think its such a large genre too because you can have so many mixes of it but I have now discovered a lot more of this genre, for me time travel back is sort of historical fiction and the series I recently picked up has all of this in it, the Gem trilogy by Kerstin Gier I believe its called with ruby red, sapphire blue and emerald green.

One of the things I loved was the details about the costumes and about some of the details as well.
Another series where its sort of in this genre but not really is the Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare, it is obviously fantasy but I loved the detail she went to to actually find out specific details that helped the book feel more real like you were actually there.

This is definately a genre I want to read more of, I've always loved history and can't wait to read more, such as the bronze horse man series, I find a good booktuber to watch when it comes to historical fiction is PeruseProject she has a great collection of historical fiction.

A small reading through the ages

Hey!

I was trying to think of a good first real post so I thought I would talk about some of the reasons I started reading and some of those childhood Authors

My first real reading experience was with the author Margaret Mahy, who is from my native New Zealand. I loved her children's books and I finally realized what books existed!
I read a lot after that at primary school (6-13) I used the library, got into books like Girls rock and the Magic school bus. I feel like my genre choice then was huge! I read horror, contemporary, fantasy and even non fiction. I just wanted to learn and reading was my way of doing so but also to escape.

Favorite Series Ever

1st Book in The Series

Once I got a little bit older I moved on to Harry Potter by JK Rowling and A series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket which are still some of my favorite series.There wasn't just fiction, one book I really liked growing up was Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah based on the authors life as a small child after she caused the death of her mother through child birth (go read it people) And it made me move forward in my reading and definitely change the genres I liked, a lot of humor and a large amount of fantasy, one of these being Confessions of Georgia Nicholson by Louise Rennison! (A must read I might say such a great series for like 14 and up I guess).

I feel like my favorite genres would be fantasy or high fantasy and I have stopped reading horror and as much contemporary. Booktube has helped though to have a larger range of books that I want to read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves reading. I follow a number of people such as Polandbananasbooks, littlebookowl and jessiethereader to name a few but they give great advice on books.
